Summary: Automatic welding of narrow gap welds offers several advantages
Applies to:  
Implementing automatic welding for narrow gap welds offers several advantages as provided by Korean construction experience and is as follows:

  • For full penetration welds the shrinkage and defect rate is substantially lower than typical welds and the contraction rate is more uniform
  • One can backfill the weld on the ID after a full penetration weld of up to 1 inch
  • Automatic TIG welding with the same welding machine can be used for the inside stainless steel cladding
  • It is possible to use possibly 4 welding machines simultaneously to weld the reactor coolant piping and thus reduce the welding duration time
  • When applying automatic welding to a relatively thick wall pipe welding productivity is excellent
  • It is only cost effective to use automatic welding over manual welding if it is used in more than one plant because of the cost of the equipment
