It must be recognized that improperly made welds and using an improper fabrication process can allow the initiation of certain degradation mechanisms. For example, cold work of stainless steel can be a contributor to stress corrosion cracking of the material in a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) environment.

It appears there is a consensus that sensitization, residual stresses, cold work, and reduced fracture toughness are key degradation initiators for welds of the type typically used for the reactor coolant system in BWRs and Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR).
